Vancouver International (YVR) does not currently receive Air India nonstop service — all YVR–DEL itineraries require at least one connection. The primary routings are: Air Canada via Toronto Pearson (YYZ) connecting to Air India's AI 187 nonstop, or a single long-haul connection via a Gulf hub (Emirates via DXB, Air Arabia via SHJ, flydubai via DXB) or via a European hub (Lufthansa via FRA, KLM via AMS, Swiss via ZRH). Air India Express (IX, the LCC subsidiary of Air India Group) does not operate to Canada.
For BC-origin travellers, the YVR–YYZ–DEL routing via Air Canada/Air India interline or the YVR–DXB–DEL routing via Emirates are the two dominant market offerings. The YVR–DXB–DEL Emirates routing is frequently price-competitive with the AC/AI interline on premium economy and business class inventory, and carries a 2×23 kg economy PC allowance applicable throughout the itinerary under a single Emirates ticket.
Air Canada YVR–YYZ + Air India AI 187 YYZ–DEL (interline or through-check)
AC metal YVR–YYZ (approx. 4h 30m) connects with AI 187 (YYZ–DEL, nonstop, 14h 40m). When ticketed under a single PNR with Air India as the primary carrier, baggage can be checked through YVR to DEL. Allowance reverts to AI's published PC rules: 2×23 kg economy. Check-in at YVR T3 (Air Canada) — allow minimum 3 hours before YYZ departure to account for YVR–YYZ sector and the YYZ connection time.
Air India codeshares on select Air Canada YVR–YYZ departures. When booked on an AI designator throughout, passengers may check-in at YVR under the AI booking reference — however, YVR does not have an AI check-in desk. Use Air Canada's T3 counters for the YVR leg under the interline agreement.
Emirates YVR–DXB–DEL (A380 or B777 on both segments)
Emirates operates YVR–DXB on EK 227/228 (Boeing 777-200LR), connecting to EK DEL flights from Dubai T3. Total routing time typically 20–22 hours. Economy baggage: 2×23 kg PC throughout on a single Emirates ticket. Business Class: 4×32 kg.
Emirates' YVR lounge (accessible to Business and First passengers at YVR International T) is operated as a common-use facility. The Emirates EK 228 from DXB arrives YVR in the morning — YVR Customs and Border Services wait times are notably longer for pre-noon arrivals when multiple widebody aircraft clear simultaneously.
